Altona Innovation Park

An ecosystem for research and development: located in the immediate vicinity to DESY, a national research centre of the Helmholtz Association, the Altona Research and Innovation Park is increasingly turning into an international science park that integrates basic research, applied research, and the transfer into marketable products.

In recent years, the Bahrenfeld research campus with DESY, the University of Hamburg and numerous other high-ranking scientific institutions such as the X-ray laser research facility XFEL has developed into one of the world's leading locations in the field of structural research.

With Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, one of Hamburg's most ambitious future projects for the coming decades, this excellent development will continue in the future. It integrates science, research and teaching, business and modern urban development. In addition to DESY, more than 5,000 students of the University of Hamburg in the fields of chemistry, physics and biology will conduct research, work and live here in the future. Renowned institutes and excellent study and teaching conditions are envisaged, and the following will be created, among others around 2,500 new homes, cultural and sports facilities and social amenities.

Another elementary building block is the Altona Innovation Park. This is where science and industry work together directly. In close proximity to DESY and the University, start-ups are to work together with scientists on new technologies and drive innovations forward.

The first step will be an integrated technology and start-up centre of DESY with one location each on the DESY campus and in the innovation park Vorhornweg (DESY Innovation Factory I & II) as well as the tecHHub of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which is also planned in the innovation park Vorhornweg. This is intended to create attractive opportunities for innovative companies and spin-offs from the focal sectors of the Innovation Park through a high proportion of laboratory space, flexible rental offers and direct embedding in the innovation ecosystem. In addition to the rental offers, plots of land are also available for leasehold in the Innovation Park.

As the responsible anchor institute, DESY will drive the content-related connection of the new buildings with the research campus and other institutes in Science City to create an ecosystem that combines research, teaching and innovation in a unique way.

In order to meet the urgent need for laboratory space in the short term and to be able to retain or attract talent, the tecHHub is being planned in a modular - and thus more quickly realisable - design.
